FROM RISING COSTS TO HAPPY GUESTS

A Smarter Way to Manage Your Parks Energy...

Holiday parks across the UK are under pressure. Operators are trying to balance rising energy costs, increasing guest expectations, and the sheer complexity of managing utilities across sprawling sites. The problem is all too familiar: one guest runs a heater and an air fryer nonstop, another guest plugs in an electric vehicle, while others barely use a lightbulb and yet everyone is charged the same.

Without accurate visibility, parks either undercharge and lose revenue, or introduce blanket surcharges that frustrate guests. Traditional systems only make things worse. Manual meter readings, paper billing, and reconciliations create an endless admin burden. Bills arrive late and forecasting costs becomes guesswork.

Smart card systems, once seen as the answer, now feel clunky and outdated, with guests expecting the same seamless digital service they get everywhere else in their lives. The result? Operators are left firefighting instead of focusing on delivering great holidays. This is exactly the challenge that Rolec and Metpow are solving.

Rolec has been the UK’s trusted name in outdoor utility hardware for over 35 years, with robust, weather-resistant meter boxes and pedestals used in thousands of parks. By combining this proven hardware with Metpow’s innovative, cloud-based software, operators now have a future-proof solution that makes managing utilities simple, transparent, and profitable.

The system transforms Rolec’s pedestals into intelligent, connected devices. Each pitch is linked to Metpow through secure LoRaWAN gateways, ensuring constant connection across the site. Unlike Wi-Fi and 4G, which struggle with signal dropouts and interference from vehicles, trees, or park infrastructure, LoRaWAN provides reliable, low-power connectivity that is perfectly suited to large outdoor environments.

ROLEC PEDESTALS, POWERED BY METPOW, provide real-time energy monitoring across each pitch, keeping both guests and operators in control.

It means every unit stays connected without operators worrying about dead spots, weak signals, or the cost of maintaining mobile contracts. From the operator’s side, the features are designed to make life easier. Real-time usage insights show exactly what each guest is consuming, while personalised dashboards allow staff to monitor the entire site at a glance.

Interactive site mapping makes even the largest or most complex park simple to oversee, and remote control means supply can be managed instantly, with alerts flagging anything unusual before it becomes a problem. Automated, upfront billing ensures guests know exactly what they are paying, while the self-serve Metpow app allows them to top up, receive low-balance alerts, and view their usage whenever they like.

It’s a system designed for fairness and convenience, both for operators and their guests. As Holly Brown, Commercial Director at Rolec, explains: “The combination of Rolec’s proven hardware with Metpow’s smart software creates a solution that’s not just about technology, it’s about helping operators run more profitable, efficient, and guest-friendly parks. It’s robust, reliable, and ready for the future.”

For operators, the benefits are clear. Sites using Rolec powered by Metpow are recovering their investment in as little as two seasons. By charging fairly and transparently, they stop subsidising high-consumption guests, while still keeping visitors happy with a system that feels modern and easy to use.

Office teams save hours of manual work each week, cutting out meter readings, spreadsheets, and reconciliations. And with accurate data on usage and costs, forecasting and budgeting finally become straightforward. Guests, meanwhile, appreciate the transparency. They pay only for what they use, with no hidden charges or arguments at checkout.

LORAWAN CONNECTIVITY ensures every unit stays reliably online, even across large and complex park sites.

The convenience of app-based payments and instant top-ups makes their stay easier, and parks report improved satisfaction and return visits. Some operators are also highlighting the sustainability features of the platform, including live data on carbon impact and carbon offsetting, which appeal to increasingly eco-conscious holidaymakers.

Ed Jones, CEO of Metpow, sums it up: “Holiday parks are being squeezed from both sides. Rising wholesale energy costs and rising guest expectations. Our mission is to put operators back in control. By pairing Rolec’s industry-leading hardware with Metpow’s software, we’ve created a solution that saves money, reduces admin, and delivers a better guest experience.”

One park manager perhaps put it best: “Before Metpow, we were losing money on electricity and spending hours on admin. Now, everything is transparent. Guests pay fairly, we stay in control, and our team has more time to focus on the guest experience.” With rising energy costs here to stay and guest expectations continuing to climb, this isn’t just about keeping the lights on.

AUTOMATED ALERTS and remote control allow operators to manage energy efficiently and respond to issues before they escalate.

It’s about future-proofing your park. Smart card systems belong to the past. Cloud-based solutions like Rolec powered by Metpow are the future. Bringing operators clarity, efficiency, and profitability, while giving guests the transparency and convenience they expect.

If your park is still wrestling with outdated systems and unpredictable bills, now is the time to make the change. Book a free, no-obligation quote today and discover how Rolec and Metpow can help your park save money, delight guests, and prepare for the future. EV RANGE ANXIETY ROADBLOCKS

EV RANGE ANXIETY ROADBLOCKS

Funding support available for holiday park operators...

47% OF THE AVAILABLE public charging network, or 19,044 charge-points, can be found in destination locations.

Identified as the main concern for EV drivers in Zenith’s EVXperience report, range anxiety and the struggle of finding somewhere to charge-up on long journeys, stands as a major roadblock to enjoying an EV staycation. Having the option of charging at your destination, for many, will make the difference between a relaxing family vacation or a weekend trawling the countryside trying to get charged up.

Holiday park operators could be eligible for government grants of up to £14,000 towards the purchase and installation of new chargepoints through the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS). This grant covers up to 75% of the total cost of chargepoint purchase and installation, up to £350 per socket.

Charging tariffs can now be completely customised: you can segment pricing for different groups, like staff and public. Tariffs can be raised during peak hours, and you can even reserve chargepoints for certain visitors at certain times -- meaning you can guarantee your guests will have charging available to them.

Thanks to their recent partnership with Wattif EV, Rolec is in the unique position of being able to offer partial and fully-funded options to EV customers. If you did want to take part in the WCS, applications close at the end of March next year.

TURNKEY SOLUTIONS
Wattif’s 100% fully funded turnkey solution covers the cost of charge-point installation, purchase, maintenance, and software. Meaning you can install charging infrastructure without any risk of investment for the business. Alternatively, you can take advantage of a 50% partially funded option.

If you opt for this alternative, Wattif EV will take responsibility for the cost of installing, maintaining, and operating your charge-point but the initial upfront cost will be shared between the two. According to the International Energy Agency, the number of electric cars on the road globally surpassed 10 million in 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

This trend is expected to continue as more manufacturers invest in electric vehicle technology. Almost half (47%) of the available public charging network, or 19,044 chargepoints, can be found in destination locations. By adding charging to your list of facilities, EV drivers will have the security of knowing that they won’t have to plan their trip around charging, which will encourage them to favour your park for their next short-break or summer holiday.

Test Pilots

Test Pilots - Outdoor Essentials

Test Pilots

Let your guests be the judge of your outdoor improvements...

What better time than peak season to carry out an audit of your outdoor amenities. From weather-proofing al fresco entertainment areas, to checking the popularity of new playground features; your guests are the ultimate test pilots. It is your customers who will ultimately decide on the return on investment of your winter improvements; voting with their feet, this year’s – and crucially – next year’s holiday budget. Now is the time to start the appraisal process, You need to spot what look like winners or losers. Modifications may be needed and some may have to wait until the winter months. But it may not be prudent to wait when a stitch in time could reap rich rewards in the form of repeat business and maximising spend.
Quick fix amendments could be something as simple as adding more bins or sprucing up your signage, or garden displays. If outdoor spaces are well maintained, they will encourage user-participation by inspiring visitors to be outdoors in the grounds, making full use of the facilities,” points out Christine Virginie, Marketing Manager for Test Pilots 2Fordingbridge, who are key suppliers when it comes to maximising outdoor space. “This can create great word of mouth and repeat business from visitors having just had a great experience at your park,” Christine continues. “Word of mouth is the most powerful form of marketing and the best aspect is, it’s free! “If your equipment is covered by a canopy, it also increases the life span and therefore reduces maintenance and replacement costs,” adds Christine.

Offering customer-friendly outdoor dining is a no-brainer. An inviting al fresco experience with smart furniture and heaters for chilly evenings will increase the number of covers you can serve and ultimately increase your bottom line. One of the key decisions when planning to utilise external areas, is whether the space is for activities, that can generate income or that simply add value to your overall offering. “Presentation of all areas is important, whether a playground, a dining area or a wild flower meadow – they all need to be maintained,” says Simon Williams, Commercial Director at Bridge Leisure Parks. According to Simon there is also a growing trend of people wanting to reconnect with nature and to be active outdoors – and this has been an area of focus for Bridge Leisure Parks. “Our recent outdoor developments include foot golf, archery, dog agility courses, pitch and putt and crazy golf. At Ashbourne Heights in Derbyshire, we’ve recently invested in a foot golf course for one of the fields and developed a nature trail through the woods.

Test Pilots 3

Bridge Leisure not only provides active areas on its parks – the operator also promotes ranger activities to take advantage of their parks’ surroundings, providing expert knowledge about the local landscape and wildlife. This is complemented with on-park signage providing more detail about the plants and animals that can be found. There is no better way of enhancing and enriching an outdoor space than by investing in play equipment. Creating an innovative play space that fi res a child’s imagination and creates a pleasant environment for parents to get together is a winning formula for holiday parks. If you are looking to breathe new life into your play offering then HAGS boasts a huge portfolio and bucket-loads of experience. The company provides a turnkey solution with services including landscaping, fencing, decking and even artificial rock faces. The play specialists manufacture a vast range of products including play equipment for all ages, outdoor gym and fitness equipment, multi-use games areas, skating, ‘parkour’ and furniture. Camber Sands Holiday Park is a typical example. The park owners wanted separate areas for toddlers and juniors and a wide range of equipment. HUGE HIT They enlisted the help of HAGS-SMP to design and install the scheme, which included themed multi-play units, dynamic equipment, a zip line, sunken trampolines and a trail with an 8m traverse wall. The play area has proven to be a huge hit with customers, and according to HAGS, the only complaint from site has been to ask how to keep the adults off the equipment! “Theming seems to be a constant favourite with our clients. From pirate ships to fairytale castles you can add real play value to your areas by engaging a child’s imagination,” comments Simon Wright, Head of Sales at HAGS. Simon advises: “If your budget is tight you might consider planning your scheme in phases, this way you can add to the playground over a period of time that suits.” Specialists in recycled furniture, NBB’s furniture designs are enjoying unprecedented interest this season. “They not only look great and are eco-friendly, but they’ll also will save the park owner money in the long run!” exclaims the company’s Group Marketing Manager David Dean. “In today’s world we all need to be more aware of the materials we use and ensure sustainability is on the agenda. “All of NBB’s recycled furniture products are manufactured in the UK from recycled plastic milk bottles. Purchasing a standard A-frame picnic table, for example, will save over 2,000 milk bottles from entering our waste chain,” adds David.

The owners wanted to create a weather-protected, outdoor dining/spectating space where friends and family of those participating in the water sports could dine and watch in comfort, sheltered from the elements. Keeping Up Appearances

KUAKeeping Up Appearances

From weather-proofing picnic areas, to investing in new playground equipment and waste recycling systems, holiday park owners that take pride in their park’s exterior appearance and make the most of their outdoor appeal will ultimately reap the rewards.

If you’re considering transforming your outdoor areas it needn’t be a daunting task. In fact, investing in a few simple and cost effective measures can go a long way in improving aesthetics, comfort and facilities for your guests. “It’s important to keep outdoor spaces well-maintained as this is one of the first impressions visitors will experience at your park,” says Stephen Toone, Managing Director of Fordingbridge Plc – a leading manufacturer of canopies, walkways and sustainable buildings.

“Your clientele are more likely to return to your site and recommend to their friends and family if the external appearance is tidy.”

Maximising the use of outdoor spaces all year round by weather-proofing your facilities can not only improve your customers’ experience, but also set your park apart from the competition.

“We are seeing an increase in demand for weather protected activity areas and dining spaces. Popular designs include the soft aesthetics of timber, which blend nicely into forest parks. Alternatively, tensile structures which can be applied to all types of parks in any setting,” says Stephen.

Fordingbridge 1Fordingbridge work in partnership with parks to maximise customer experience and increase revenue potential. The experienced in-house design team assists by designing a canopy, walkway or queuing area pertinent to a park’s individual requirements or brand consistency at different sites. “Canopies can be used for increasing dining and picnic areas, which improve dwell time and all year round usage. Further uses include aesthetically pleasing storage facilities, such as secure bike shelters or outdoor activity equipment,” says Stephen.

ENGAGING IDEAS

“With more competition than ever before within the holiday park and leisure sector, attracting customers with new and engaging ideas are vital to achieve this. One of the many innovative ideas is the inspiring and engaging butterfly exhibit, which provides an attraction to suit all ages in all weather conditions.” A comprehensive outdoor play area is a winning formula for hospitality venues looking to appeal to young families.

Camber Sands Holiday Park in Sussex required a large new play area as part of a refurbishment project earlier this year.  The park owners wanted separate areas for toddlers and juniors and a wide range of equipment.  They enlisted the help of HAGS-SMP to design and install the scheme, which included themed multi-play units, dynamic equipment, a zip line, sunken trampolines and a trail with an 8m traverse wall.

The play area has proven to be a huge hit with customers, and according to HAGS, the only complaint from site has been to ask how to keep the adults off the equipment!  “Theming seems to be a constant favourite with our clients.  From pirate ships to fairy-tale castles you can add real play value to your areas by engaging a child’s imagination,” comments Simon Wright, Head of Sales at HAGS.

BETTER VALUE

“With something to suit all budgets, our products are built to last, providing better value over a longer period of time. A small play area suitable for approximate six to ten children might start from £10k and increase from there.” Simon add: “Remember though, if your budget is tight you might consider planning your scheme in phases, this way you can add to the playground over a period of time that suits.”

New Income Stream For Caravan Parks

New Income Stream For Caravan Parks

The EV Charge Online charging pedestals from Rolec provide a new income stream to the caravan park.

The EV Charge Online charging pedestals from Rolec provide a new income stream to the caravan park.

A revolutionary EV charge point management system which means that EV drivers no longer have to pay any membership, subscription or connection fees and the caravan park operator does not have to pay a licence fee, has been developed by one of the UK’s electric vehicle charge point manufacturers.

The EV Charge Online from Rolec enables EV drivers to simply pull up to a charge point and, using their mobile phone, login to the charge point and pay-to-charge using Visa, MasterCard, American Express or PayPal via Rolec EV’s secure back office. GPRS connectivity to the back office is provided by Rolec’s network partner Vodafone, who supply roaming SIM cards designed to lock onto the strongest signal in the area, regardless of network provider. Over 200 businesses have already installed EV charging pedestals complete with the EV Charge Online system.

Rolec EV’s Managing Director Kieron Alsop commented: “These charging pedestals, when used by an EV driver, immediately begin paying money back directly into the caravan park operator’s bank account.” He added: “These self-managing pedestals are easy to install, requiring only an electricity supply in order to provide EV drivers with charging facilities.”
