John Fowler Holidays has announced the high-profile acquisition of Ruda Holiday Park at Croyde Bay from Parkdean Resorts, marking a major milestone for the family-run business. The multi-million-pound deal adds one of the UK’s most iconic coastal holiday parks to the North Devon-based operator’s growing portfolio— bringing its total to 14 parks across the South West and Wales.

“This is a landmark day for us,” said Managing Director Martyn Fowler. “Ruda’s location and reputation are second to none, and we’re proud to continue its legacy.” The 300-acre park features 817 pitches, a glamping village, a tropical pool and flume, multiple food and drink outlets, and direct access to Croyde’s blue flag beach—now under John Fowler’s stewardship.

Parkdean Resorts, who owned Ruda for 23 years, said the sale aligns with its strategic goal to reinvest in its wider UK park network. CEO Steve Richards praised Ruda’s staff and legacy, confident John Fowler will maintain its high standards. The deal cements John Fowler’s position as one of the UK’s largest family-owned holiday park groups, with over 800 employees and a turnover of £50 million. STUDENTS FROM DERWEN College gain hands-on experience at Woodland Park Lodges’ treehouse retreat in Shropshire.

A luxury treehouse holiday park in Shropshire is helping young people with special educational needs gain valuable life and work skills through an inspiring new partnership. Woodland Park Lodges, a family-owned site nestled in 52 acres of countryside near the Welsh border, has teamed up with nearby Derwen College to offer weekly work placements for students.

AA inspector Stephen Wilkinson praised the site’s thoughtful layout, top-tier facilities and scenic setting, stating: “The BBQ and pizza oven areas are a great feature, and the open water pool, beach and paddle pool were well used and clearly enjoyed by guests during my visit.”

DRY WEATHER SPARKS CARAVAN FIRE ALERT

With the UK experiencing its driest spring in over a century and the mercury rising fast this summer, Compass, a leading provider of caravan and leisure insurance, is urging static caravan owners to take urgent steps to reduce the risk of fire.

Static caravans are particularly vulnerable during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Their fixed positions, close proximity to neighbouring units, and lightweight construction—often using plastic and thin cladding—can cause fires to spread rapidly.

The added presence of LPG gas cylinders, if not stored or maintained correctly, only heightens the danger. The warning follows a notable surge in fire-related claims. Between June 2022 and May 2023, Compass recorded fire claims totalling over £165,000—more than six times the previous year’s total and representing 10% of all caravan and park home claims.

With summer 2025 expected to rival 2022’s record-breaking heat, the risk is growing. Kevin Minnear, Head of Underwriting at Compass, said: “Caravans are a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, but they carry serious fire risks, especially in hot and dry conditions. We’ve seen too many families lose their holiday homes and belongings to fire.

We’re asking everyone to stay vigilant and follow basic safety practices.” Common causes of caravan fires include barbecue use near units, careless disposal of cigarettes, unattended cooking, faulty gas appliances, and electrical faults. Fires in caravans are statistically more likely to result in serious injury or death than those in conventional housing.
