HOLIDAY PARK ADOPTS FLOOD ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Weir Caravan Park in Stamford Bridge has become the first site in Yorkshire to install Flood Adaptive Platforms, pioneering flood-resilient holiday accommodation. Developed by Yorkshire-based Flood Technology Group, the innovation allows caravans to automatically elevate in response to rising water levels, offering vital protection against flooding.

This ground breaking initiative not only safeguards the site’s accommodation but also enables the park to secure full flood insurance coverage through specialist provider Compass. The move is part of site owner Kevin Hind’s strategy to future-proof the business in light of increasing flood risks.

The installation follows the recent implementation of a Flood Early Warning System at the park, providing real-time updates to facilitate timely evacuations. Up to ten pitches will eventually feature the flood-responsive platforms.

Simon Gilliland, CEO of Flood Technology Group, emphasized the growing need for such innovations: “With climate change accelerating flood risks, adaptive solutions like ours are essential for holiday parks. Our technology has already proven successful in modular homes and lodges, and we’re seeing rising demand across the UK.”

Kevin Hind added, “This cutting-edge technology provides peace of mind for us and our visitors. The installation was seamless, and we’re confident it’s the best way to protect both people and property.”

CUSTOMERS GOING PAPERLESS RAISE OVER £200K FOR HEART RESEARCH UK

Caravan, campervan, and motorhome owners have helped Halifax-based insurance specialists Caravan Guard and Leisuredays reach a landmark £214,000 in donations to Heart Research UK by choosing paperless policies.

Since 2010, Caravan Guard has pledged £1 to Heart Research UK each time a customer opts to receive their policy documents via email rather than by post. In 2025, the company hit an incredible milestone, with a record-breaking £25,405 donated in the 2024 policy year alone.

Beyond paperless donations, Caravan Guard staff have taken on major fundraising challenges such as the Great North Run and the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride, raising additional funds for vital heart disease research.

A study published in The Lancet highlights the importance of such efforts, revealing that 25 to 44-year-olds in northern England are 47% more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than their southern counterparts.

To celebrate this achievement, Heart Research UK and Caravan Guard hosted a staff health check event, providing blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, as well as a fun ‘Strike a Light’ game to encourage heart-healthy activity.

Managing Director Ryan Wilby said: “We’re thrilled to donate a record-breaking amount to Heart Research UK. Thanks to our growing customer base, we can continue supporting life-saving medical research.”

Heart Research UK CEO Kate-Bratt Farrar added: “Caravan Guard’s unwavering support has been instrumental in funding research and promoting heart health. Together, we’re making a real difference.”

TALACRE BEACH RESORT CELEBRATES 60TH

A JEWEL IN THE CROWN of a national holiday operator is celebrating its diamond anniversary.

Darwin Escapes’ Talacre Beach Resort is marking its 60th anniversary with a £1 million redevelopment, reinforcing its status as a premier holiday destination on the North Wales coast. The 44-acre park in Flintshire, home to more than 450 caravans and lodges, continues to attract thousands of visitors each year.

The investment has enhanced the park’s clubhouse, accommodation, and leisure facilities, including a new games area and children’s playground. Sales Manager Chris Williams, who joined the resort in 2004, has witnessed its transformation first-hand.

“Talacre Beach Resort has been a beloved getaway since the 1960s, especially for visitors from the Midlands and North of England,” said Chris. “Many of our owners have been here for generations, which speaks volumes about the community and the quality of our offering.” The resort has defied post-pandemic trends with a strong influx of new owners.

Nearby attractions such as the historic Point of Ayr lighthouse, RSPB nature reserve, and local cafes and arcades add to its appeal. “The stunning beach, fresh sea air, and peaceful surroundings provide the perfect escape,” Chris added.

“We’ve built trust with our owners, many of whom upgrade their holiday homes over time, growing with us.” With a tropical swimming pool, state-of-the-art gym, bar, restaurant, and packed events calendar, Talacre Beach Resort continues to thrive.

THE SUNNY SIDE UP

With more holiday parks embracing photovoltaic (PV) solar panel systems to cut energy bills and lower their carbon footprint, protecting that investment is more important than ever.
While solar energy can provide long-term savings and environmental benefits, it also introduces new risks that require careful insurance planning.

COVER FOR PROPERTY DAMAGE
PV systems are vulnerable to damage from weather events, vandalism, and accidental impacts.
Parks should speak with their insurer to confirm that their existing property policy includes cover for storm damage (including hail and high winds), fire, electrical faults, theft, vandalism, and accidental damage from incidents like falling branches or vehicle collisions.

MITIGATING BUSINESS INTERRUPTION
For parks that rely heavily on solar power, a damaged system can impact operations.
Business interruption insurance can protect against loss of income while repairs are underway, helping to minimise disruption to guests and maintain cash flow.

LIABILITY AND COMPLIANCE
Public liability insurance is crucial for protecting against claims arising from solar panel-related injuries or property damage—such as falling panels or electrical fires from faulty installations.
It’s also essential to work with an MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certified installer who carries appropriate liability cover. This helps ensure installations meet strict safety and compliance standards.

BEVERLEY HOLIDAYS CARAVAN PARK, nestled in the English Riviera, unveils the brand-new Solar Signature Eco and leads the way in eco-tourism

SECURITY AND THEFT PREVENTION
Because solar panels can be attractive to thieves, insurance should include theft protection. Parks can reduce risk by installing CCTV and motion-sensor lighting.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND FIRE HAZARDS
PV solar systems include materials—like lithium-ion batteries—that may be hazardous if damaged. Pollution liability insurance offers added protection against environmental claims.
Fire risks can also arise due to moisture ingress, dirt buildup, or substandard components. The Fire Protection Association (FPA) recommends using non-combustible roof surfaces, appropriate fire-rated materials, and ensuring inverters are installed in safe, ventilated areas.

TOP TIPS FROM PIB INSURANCE
• Choose MCS-certified installers for design, installation, and maintenance
• Consult your local fire service to flag any firefighting challenges
• Fit fire switches that isolate both AC and DC sides of the system
• Keep inverters at least two metres from combustible materials Even in low light, solar panels can generate current—posing risks during emergency response.

Understanding the hazards and putting the right insurance and safety measures in place can ensure parks reap the rewards of solar power without the pitfalls.
