LIFE’S BETTER AT THE BEACH

WHETHER IT’S A FAMILY MEAL, a light lunch or evening drinks, Ruda’s welcoming dining venues cater for every occasion.

Following its acquisition by family-owned operator John Fowler Holidays, Ruda Holiday Park delivers the ultimate Devon escape...

Few holiday parks in the UK can boast a location quite as spectacular as Ruda Holiday Park. Nestled on the golden sands of Croyde Bay in North Devon, this iconic destination has long been a favourite among families, surfers and holidaymakers seeking the perfect coastal escape. Now under the ownership of North Devon-based John Fowler Holidays, the park is entering an exciting new chapter.

Holiday Park Scene was delighted to be invited to experience Ruda first-hand and, after spending several days exploring the park, enjoying the facilities and relaxing in one of its luxury lodges, it quickly became clear why this destination continues to attract visitors year after year.

A STUNNING COASTAL LOCATION
The first thing that strikes you about Ruda is its exceptional setting. Positioned directly above the famous sands of Croyde Bay, the park offers something that many holiday parks can only dream of – direct access to one of the UK’s most beautiful beaches.

A short stroll from the accommodation brings guests straight onto the beach, where golden sands meet rolling Atlantic waves. Whether you’re looking to relax by the sea, enjoy a coastal walk or try your hand at surfing, the stunning surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for a memorable holiday.

The beach itself is widely regarded as one of Britain’s premier surfing destinations, attracting beginners and experienced surfers alike. Watching the sunset over the bay after a day exploring the park was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our stay.

RUDA HOLIDAY PARK enjoys an enviable position overlooking the golden sands of Croyde Bay, one of North Devon’s most popular coastal destinations.

LUXURY ACCOMMODATION WITH A TOUCH OF INDULGENCE
For our visit, we stayed in one of Ruda’s luxury lodges complete with a private hot tub, and it proved to be the ideal base for exploring the park and surrounding area. The accommodation was modern, spacious and exceptionally comfortable, featuring stylish interiors, well-equipped living spaces and everything needed for a relaxing break.

However, it was the hot tub that truly elevated the experience. After busy days enjoying the facilities and exploring the coastline, sinking into the warm bubbling water during the evening was the perfect way to unwind.

Whether enjoying an early morning coffee or relaxing beneath the stars after sunset, the hot tub added a genuine touch of luxury to our stay. The quality of accommodation across the park reflects the continued improvements being made at Ruda, helping to appeal to both traditional family holidaymakers and those seeking a more premium coastal getaway.

RECENTLY REFURBISHED, the Cascades Tropical Adventure Pool is one of Ruda’s standout family attractions.

MAKING A SPLASH AT CASCADES TROPICAL ADVENTURE POOL
No visit to Ruda would be complete without experiencing the impressive Cascades Tropical Adventure Pool. Recently refurbished as part of a wider programme of enhancements across the park, this standout facility combines fun, excitement and relaxation under one roof.

Designed to appeal to guests of all ages, the tropical-themed complex provides hours of entertainment whatever the weather. The flume was an immediate hit with our group and quickly became one of the most talked-about parts of the stay.

Whether racing friends to the bottom or simply enjoying the thrill of the ride, it proved impossible to resist. Beyond the flume, the tropical-themed environment creates a genuinely exciting atmosphere, with interactive water features and plenty of space for families to enjoy together. It’s easy to see why the pool has become one of the park’s most popular attractions.

John Fowler Holidays acquired Ruda Holiday Park from Parkdean Resorts in a multi-million-pound deal announced on 25 June 2025.

CATCHING WAVES AT THE SURF SCHOOL
Given Ruda’s enviable location overlooking one of the UK’s premier surfing beaches, it comes as no surprise that surfing plays a major role in the guest experience. The on-site surf school offers visitors the opportunity to learn from experienced instructors, with lessons available for all ages and abilities.

For beginners, it’s an ideal introduction to the sport, while more experienced surfers can take advantage of equipment hire and local expertise. One of the biggest advantages is the convenience. Guests can move seamlessly from accommodation to beach and into the water within minutes, making it incredibly easy to make the most of Croyde’s famous waves.

Even for those who prefer to stay dry, simply watching the surfers from the shoreline provides plenty of entertainment and adds to the unique atmosphere that makes Ruda such a special destination.

FROM FAMILY ACTIVITIES to live evening entertainment, there’s always something happening at Ruda Holiday Park.

ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
One area where Ruda truly excels is its extensive family entertainment programme. Throughout our stay there was always something happening, ensuring guests of all ages remained engaged and entertained.

From daytime activities and children’s events to live evening performances, there is a real sense of energy throughout the park. No traditional holiday park experience would be complete without bingo, and the lively sessions during our stay proved to be a real crowd-pleaser, delivering plenty of laughs, friendly competition and holiday fun.

Alongside bingo, guests can enjoy live entertainment, family games, children’s activities and evening performances, ensuring there’s always something to look forward to once the sun goes down. The entertainment team deserve particular credit for their enthusiasm and professionalism, helping to create a welcoming environment that encourages families to make the most of everything the park has to offer.

DIRECT BEACH ACCESS means guests are just moments away from the surf, sand and stunning scenery of Croyde Bay.

A BRIGHT FUTURE UNDER JOHN FOWLER HOLIDAYS
One of the most exciting developments for Ruda is its recent acquisition by John Fowler Holidays, one of the UK’s largest family-owned holiday park operators.

Based in North Devon, the company has been creating memorable holiday experiences for more than 70 years and now operates parks across the South West and Wales. Their local knowledge and long-standing commitment to quality tourism make them a natural fit for this iconic coastal destination.

Since taking ownership, John Fowler Holidays has invested around £1 million into the park, enhancing accommodation, facilities and guest experiences while ensuring Ruda retains the character and charm that generations of holidaymakers have come to love.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Ruda Holiday Park successfully combines everything guests could wish for from a modern seaside escape: an unbeatable beachfront location, quality accommodation, impressive facilities and a packed programme of family entertainment.

From relaxing in a luxury hot tub lodge and making a splash in the Cascades Tropical Adventure Pool to enjoying a game of bingo or watching surfers tackle the waves at Croyde Bay, every day offered something different to enjoy. With direct beach access, ongoing investment and the backing of one of the UK’s most respected family-owned holiday park operators, Ruda is firmly cementing its position as one of the South West’s leading holiday destinations.

The vibrant mix of holiday destination talent...

BUTLIN’S BIG WEEKENDERS, exclusively for adults, has a brand-new break for 2023, We Call It Dance.

Holiday entertainment has significantly evolved from the first Redcoats of the 1930 and the Hi de Hi era of the Sixties. Operators of parks, large and small, still agree that getting the entertainment mix right remains crucial to ensure happy, satisfied customers. While holiday parks continue to evolve and offer modern amenities, depending on the target market, the traditional camp host still has a place.

Their expertise, personal touch, and ability to create a sense of community contribute to the overall experience and can make a holiday park stay even more enjoyable. These days, holiday destinations are constantly raising the bar by offering a diverse range of entertainment options to cater to different age groups and interests.

A mix of live shows, musical performances, themed events, and interactive experiences all aim to engage visitors. Holiday parks typically manage their entertainment offerings through a combination of planning, coordination, and collaboration.

• Entertainment Programming: Design a varied programme that caters to different age groups and interests, including live performances, themed events, sports tournaments, and workshops.

• Talent Booking: While considering the preferences and demographics of guests, working with external performers or talent agencies can be a cost-efficient way of securing talent such as musicians, magicians, dancers, and comedians.

• Activity Scheduling: The entertainment team creates a schedule for activities, ensuring a good balance throughout the day. This helps guests plan their participation and prevents overlapping events.

• Facilities and Venues: Dedicated spaces for entertainment may include theatres, outdoor stages, sports courts, and activity rooms. These areas are equipped with appropriate sound systems, lighting, and seating arrangements to enhance the overall experience.

• Key Personnel: Trained staff members including entertainers, activity coordinators, and event managers, are employed to execute the entertainment programme. They oversee the smooth operation of events, interact with guests, and ensure everyone’s enjoyment and safety.

• Guest Feedback: Collecting client feedback through surveys, suggestion boxes, or online platforms.

This helps them understand preferences, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments to future programs. No better example of holiday destination entertainment than Butlins with its wide range of shows, live performances, and activities suitable for all ages. The resorts often feature popular acts, live music, and themed events, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere.

BIG WEEKENDERS
Ranging from genre specific breaks like the new We Call It Dance weekender to popular decade breaks, 2023 will see 16 different Big Weekenders – all for adults only. There are also some new, big-name artists performing at Butlin’s for the first time. Continuing with the dance theme, Tom Zanetti, Route 94 and Lovely Laura and Ben Santiago are all new acts playing the We Love Ibiza weekender.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is other new headliner performing on Back To The 2000s and Replay Weekenders. Mike Godolphin, Entertainment Director at Butlin’s, said: “We’re thrilled to be introducing a new dance weekender featuring some of the biggest names in the industry. “We Call It Dance is a brilliant opportunity to get your mates together and enjoy an unforgettable three nights of house, disco, garage and much more.

We can’t wait to see everyone on the dancefloor in Skegness later this year.” With the tagline ‘the Home of Entertainment’, Butlin’s is continually redefining what entertainment is, could and should be. The holiday park chain is opening a brand-new indoor activity centre, PLAYXPERIENCE, at its Bognor Regis resort.

Described as “an immersive indoor hub”, this new £15million space will feature a variety of experiences all under one roof. Covering nearly 50,000 square feet, each room will be filled with adrenaline-pumping activities in the daytime and competitive, interactive bar games in the evening.

HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS like Park Holidays UK continue to invest in the quality on-site entertainment.

BIG SPENDERS
In 2022 Parkdean Resorts announced a £140 million spend nationwide at its parks as part of its biggest ever investment programme. The investment went towards new accommodation, new and upgraded activities and facilities, and installing park-wide Wi-Fi capability.

The investment also allowed Parkdean to continue to roll out its hugely popular brand partnerships, with Bear Grylls’ Survival Academy, Tots’ Breaks, and events and entertainment from Milkshake and Nickelodeon now available at more parks than ever.

Steve Richards, Chief Executive of Parkdean Resorts tells us: “By investing in our parks, we’re not only improving the guest experience, but we’re also ensuring that holidaymakers keep coming back year after year, spending money in local shops, attractions, pubs and restaurants, and supporting the communities that rely so heavily on tourism.”

The entertainment and activity offering at holiday operator Away Resorts is unique to each park. Across the portfolio there is everything from archery to line dancing, laser tag, axe throwing and zorbing, to alpaca walks and yoga, arts and crafts, bug hunts. fishing and cycle hire.

There are also traditional character shows, breakfasts and meet-and- greets with the likes of Bear, Scratch and Lucy. Sammi Storey, Entertainment Manager at Sandy Balls says “[Bear’s] so real, and it’s so rewarding seeing all the kid’s smiles!”

PROVIDING DIVERSE ENTERTAINMENT options will cater to different preferences and age groups.

CUSTARD PIE
Creative Director Max Barraclough is proud of what Away Resorts has achieved: “My team thrives on building unique experiences our customers will remember forever,” he says. “Our Custard Pie and Colour Festival events are now famous, with guests coming back time and time again for them.

“Our mini festivals get customers singing, dancing and really letting go. We Live Stream many events now, so no matter which park you’re staying at you can enjoy the full Away Resorts experience. We like to think the attention to detail in all our entertainment shines through.”

The entertainment offering is big – and growing - at all the parks. A good example of this family together festival, Famaland. New for 2023, it will take place at Tattershall Lakes between 21st July –2nd September and bring together epic headline shows, mini versions of its well-loved festivals including Dinoworld, Colour Throws and Custard Pie Fights, as well as some brilliant family favourite character appearances.

“All our most popular events together each week,” says the creative team behind it. Whether seeking adrenaline-pumping adventures, enchanting live performances, or a tranquil retreat surrounded by nature, the evolution of UK holiday destination entertainment has resulted in a more inclusive and engaging experience for visitors, with a focus on providing diverse entertainment options that cater to different preferences and age groups.

Make ‘Em Smile!

Butlins holiday resorts have always been known for their entertainment including seasonal pantomime performances.

Make ‘Em Smile!

Television is largely responsible for the public view today of holiday parks with some thinking the image of Hi-De-Hi and “Hello Campers” is still the style.
But today’s holiday parks are far more sophisticated, while still aiming to provide ‘fun for everybody’ – including the thousands of staff and entertainers across the UK who make holidays unforgettable for families.
We are probably all familiar with the colour codes of those in charge of entertaining at the biggest venues in Britain.
Redcoats for Butlins, Bluecoats for Pontins and Greencoats for Warners.
And then there’s the Yellowcoats of Haven Holidays staff – 300 FunStar entertainers .
Haven Holidays entertain over three million guests and owners during a 34 week season across their 35 family holiday parks.
Daytime children’s clubs and nightly entertainment are all included in the price of a Haven holiday and each year they introduce new elements to keep it fresh and exciting and for this they need bright new talent.
Steve Donnelly, head of entertainment, says: “My vision has been to embrace entertainment concepts that are current and in tune, such as The X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing, and Britain’s Got Talent.

SPARKLY FROCKS

“In particular it has been really important to identify current and future trends that will engage and delight the whole family. The days of jazz hands and sparkly frocks are gone for Haven.
“We want dynamic young cast members who can, aside from performing, interact meaningfully with the guests and take an interest in how they are enjoying their holiday.
“By developing and improving what’s on offer to them in terms of entertainment and events, we can enhance their time at Haven and they’ll want to come back again and again.”
Butlins holiday resorts have always been known for their entertainment.
Many big names in the world of showbiz started their careers at the ‘seaside camps’, as they used to be known.
Sir Cliff Richard started his career playing with The Drifters at the Clacton-On-Sea camp.
In 1962 the Skegness camp played its part in the formation of The Beatles, when Paul McCartney and John Lennon visited to meet Ringo Starr who was playing drums with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes at the time.
They offered Ringo the drummer’s position with The Beatles, because they had just secured a recording contract. The first song McCartney himself ever sang in public was “Long Tall Sally”, at a Butlins talent competition.
As well as the many other famous names to come through the Butlins doors, they’re probably most famous for their Redcoats. Employed originally by Sir Billy Butlin to help guests find their way around the resort and entertain them through their stay, Butlin’s Redcoats are just as big a part of the Butlins experience today as they were back at the start in 1939.
Many famous faces started life as Butlins Redcoats, including Stephen Mulhern (Britain’s Got More Talent, Catchphrase), Shane Ritchie (Eastenders), Johnny Ball (Think of a Number, Playschool), Des O’Connor, Jimmy Tarbuck and Dave Allen to name but a few.
Today Butlins entertainment and entertainers are still at the heart of any visit to the three remaining seaside resorts in West Sussex (Bognor Regis), Somerset (Minehead) and Lincolnshire (Skegness).
With more than 1.5 million guests visiting each year, the Butlins team work endlessly to discover new shows, ideas and talented people to entertain the visitors.

This year Butlins is putting on a wide variety of brand new shows. Starting in February half term guests will be treated to the premiere of Scooby Doo Live, which combines live actors and characters in a musical mystery tour with monsters and ghouls!
Also making their 2014 debut in February are TV presenters and all round cheeky chaps Dick and Dom, who are bringing their unique style of mayhem into a live show for the whole family during all school holidays this year.
There will also be new live shows such as Freddie - a musical tribute to the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen - Cirque Du Hilarious, Titan The Robot and character shows from Angelina Ballerina, Mike The Knight, Thomas and Friends, Bob The Builder and Fireman Sam.
During the summer holidays Butlins will have a purpose built Big Top Circus at each of their resorts playing host to amazing aerial gymnasts, trapeze artists and comedy routines from around the world.
Mister Maker (CBeebies) will be playing all Butlins resorts over the summer with an exclusive live show, featuring music and special guests. Other summer entertainment includes The Wheel Of Death stunt team, live music, Redcoat shows and a spectacular acrobatics show.
