TOP WINS AT WALES IN BLOOM AWARDS

TREE TOPS CARAVAN PARK in Flintshire took the top spot in the category of parks with 100-plus units

BH&HPA member parks have been celebrating big wins at this year’s Wales in Bloom awards, announced at a glittering ceremony in Wrexham. Thornley Leisure Parks dominated the contest, with eight of its parks taking home prizes.

Maenan Abbey Caravan Park, set in the scenic Conwy Valley near the ruins of a 13th-century abbey, was named overall winner in the category for parks with fewer than 100 units. The group’s other seven parks earned six gold awards and one silver.

Thornley Leisure, a family-run business operating ten parks across North and Mid Wales, Cheshire, and Yorkshire, credits its dedicated gardening staff and seasonal planting teams for the success. “Exceptional surroundings reflect our commitment to quality, care, and community pride,” said marketing manager Hope Carter.

Meanwhile, Tree Tops Caravan Park in Flintshire took the overall award for parks with more than 100 units, marking its 32nd consecutive Wales in Bloom victory. The 18-acre park features themed gardens, a Japanese garden, and orchards with heritage fruit trees, using 16,000 plants each year, many grown from cuttings in its own nursery.

Co-owner Andy Walker said, “Three generations have gone into our gardens, and we aim to offer something spectacular in every season.”

Pooch Power

Pooch Power: Ashleigh Mackenzie reports on dog-friendly holiday park venues….

Dog-friendly caravans are a popular choice for holidaymakers and are available at all Thornley Leisure parks.

Historically, holiday park operators have not been shy of reaping the benefits of pet-friendly holidays.

With an estimated 8.5 million pet dogs in the UK, the ‘pooches welcome’ concept is a lucrative market for many holiday operators.

In fact, latest figures from the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) reveal that 24 per cent of all households own a pet dog, with a high proportion of those seeking to holiday away without the hassle of organising kennel stays.

For the park owner, a few simple measures can go a long way in providing a comfortable stay for four-legged friends and their owners.

Whitehill Country Park in South Devon has set tails wagging following the recent launch of a series of dog-friendly initiatives.

The Paignton holiday park has added to its pooch appeal with a boutique range for hounds looking to holiday in style.

Better still, the family-run holiday park has also introduced a warm doggy shower, brand new for 2016, which offers pooches privacy when cleaning their muddy paws. The new shower is one of many dog-friendly facilities found at the park, along with its dedicated dog exercise area and complimentary doggy bags.

Whitehill Country Park Marketing Director, Claire Jeavons, said: “It’s estimated that around 12 million households in the UK own pets, including 8.5 million dogs, and our holiday park has certainly seen a great demand for dog-friendly holidays in recent years.

“Dogs are very much part of the family and our aim at Whitehill is to make them feel just as welcome as their human counterparts and the introduction of more dog-friendly caravans, coupled with the new doggy shower, are proving a hit among owners and dogs alike.”

SIMPLE MEASURES

Guests holidaying with four-legged friends at Whitehill have a wide range of dog-friendly accommodation to choose from including caravans, luxury lodges, touring and camping pitches. All guests holidaying with dogs are given a Whitehill Doggy Information Guide on arrival which promotes all the local dog walks and attractions found in Devon.

“In previous years, Whitehill Country Park welcomed dogs on select dates throughout the holiday season, however, in 2015 we updated our dog-friendly policy by opening our doors to dogs throughout the entire season which typically runs from Easter until the end of September,” says Claire.

“Being a dog-friendly site means we can accommodate the growing number of guests looking to holiday with their dog – cutting out the frustration that was felt by many dog owners who previously had to pay for expensive kennel fees when heading off on holiday.” The biggest challenge is ensuring that the park meets the needs of guests who choose to holiday with their dog and those that don’t in equal measure.

To ensure both can enjoy their holiday to the fullest, Whitehill requests that dogs are kept on leads at all times, with the exception of the designated Dog Exercise Area, as well as not accepting dogs under the Dangerous Dogs Act. There is also a strict policy with regards to guests cleaning up after their dogs and the Grounds Team are always on hand to monitor this throughout the season.

In Full Bloom

In Full Bloom

The Beach A 1Winner of the Wales in Bloom award in 2014 and 2015, The Beach Caravan Park’s well-maintained grounds and exceptional appearance all year round is what really makes the five star park stand out from the crowd.

Located on the North Wales coastline, close to the village of Llanddulas, The Beach’s neatly kept site is complemented by its scenic position overlooking the Irish Sea.

Offering guests a peaceful retreat and the opportunity to ‘get away from it all’, the park appeals to families, young and retired couples, dog owners, water sports and cyclists alike. The owners of 211 holiday homes on the site visit regularly and the park also welcomes nearly 2,500 holidaymakers each year in the hired luxury caravans.

“Excellent customer service and our commitment to continual re-investment in our park and facilities is what sets us apart,” comments park manager Nigel Owen.

“Our biggest challenge is maintaining the high standards we have set from day one and continually looking for ways in which to improve the park and therefore the overall customer experience.”

The Beach Caravan Park is one of seven awardwinning holiday parks in North Wales, Cheshire and Yorkshire, operated by Thornley Leisure Parks. Thornley Leisure Parks was founded by William (Bill) Sutcliffe Thornley and his wife Dorothy in 1962. The couple, originally bakers from Cheshire, had holidayed in North Wales for many years and when the opportunity to establish a bakery in Conwy came their way, they decided to relocate with their twin boys to the area they had grown so fond of. Bill and Dorothy soon decided that they wanted to make their hobby their business and leave the long hours and early mornings of the bakery business behind. They purchased Craiglwyd Hall Caravan Park in 1961 and never looked back.

Keeping Up Appearances

Keeping Up Appearances

From the moment guests cross the threshold, they begin to create an opinion of your park. So first impressions, especially the overall appearance and presentation of the site, are crucial.

A bit like painting the Forth Road Bridge, keeping outdoor spaces neat and tidy can seem never ending but an abundance of high-tech equipment and machinery available on the market is making life easier.

Park owners who keep abreast of the times and invest wisely can see significant benefits in terms of performance and efficiency.

For instance, last year Lady’s Mile Holiday Park in Devon was battered by storms, resulting in a massive clearing up exercise. At the time, the park only had a six-inch chipper, which wasn’t able to cope with the volume of work, so park co-owner Jason Jeffrey took the decision to hire in a much larger machine and called for a demonstration of GreenMech’s ChipMaster 220 TMP wood chipper.

“Once Julian Cullis of GreenMech had shown us what the chipper could really do we were hooked,” explains Jason.

“It was also opportune that Julian could give us product safety demonstrations and show all the team how to use it correctly and safely.”

The ChipMaster 220 TMP is ideal for tackling really big jobs with its substantial 220mm chipping capacity. It has a generous 230mm x 230mm infeed throat and powerful twin feed rollers controlled by an electronic No-Stress system. The patented Disc-Blade chipping system will ensure a constant chip quality and reduce the volume of up to seven tonnes of clean green waste per hour. The discharge chute rotates by 280° to allow the operator to direct the chip in the required direction.
