The Great British holiday used to be a simple affair. Rudimentary accommodation and facilities were considered the norm. But nowadays holidaymakers are demanding more from their annual summer break.

In response, UK leisure operators are now investing in high quality holiday accommodation, which is equipped with en-suite bathrooms, gourmet kitchens and state-of-the-art entertainment systems.

The huge explosion of glamping has also fed the trend, with all manner of yurts, shepherd huts, safari tents and camping pods popping up in quiet corners of the countryside. The obvious appeal for holidaymakers is that they can experience the best of both worlds - the simplicity and stress-free environment of the great outdoors while enjoying home comforts, coupled with rustic country charm.

“Our customers are looking for a back to nature experience,” says Tracey Sibun of Clear Sky Safari Tents. “They want to chill with their families, to escape the pressures of everyday life and to kick back and relax in the peace and quiet of the natural world. That said, they also want an element of home luxuries too - comfy beds, sink-into sofas and a cheery space to relax as a family if the weather isn’t good.”

Durrell Wildlife Camp opened in 2012, giving guests the opportunity to stay overnight in 12 stylish Ecopods which were supplied by Boldscan.

Durrell Wildlife Camp opened in 2012, giving guests the opportunity to stay overnight in 12 stylish Ecopods which were supplied by Boldscan.

Specialising in steel and wood framed safari-style tents, Clear Sky launched its first two-storey lodge tent earlier this year, which offers flexible accommodation for larger groups and families.

Designed to complement the natural environment, the lodge is made from a highly durable hardwood frame with premium canvas to ensure resistance to the elements. “We have found increasing numbers of holiday parks are adding safari tents to attract new customers who might not consider a caravan - and to give more choice to existing customers,” says Tracey.

The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in Jersey branched into the glamping market in 2012 and has since welcomed 2,000 extra visitors each year. The Camp invested in 12 stylish Ecopods which were designed and manufactured by Boldscan, as well as a safaristyle Club House which is the focal point of the camp.

The wildlife park is situated in 32 acres of landscaped parkland and has a strong commitment to looking after Jersey’s native wildlife, with large areas designated as native habitat areas. The Ecopods were welcomed by guests who wished to stay overnight at the park and be close to nature. Each pod accommodates two adults and two children, with optional additional accommodation in a Pyramid Tent for children. Facilities include a wood burning stove for heat and cooking, plus a separate pod housing a hot shower, flushing toilet and kitchen space. Two of the Ecopods have been adapted to suit disabled visitors.

Show Hots Up For Park Operators

Show Hots Up For Park Operators

The Landscape Show features contemporary, cutting edge technologies and methods, and is supported by a comprehensive free seminar programme.

The Landscape Show features contemporary, cutting edge technologies and methods, and is supported by a comprehensive free seminar programme.

The holiday park industry has not one, but four trade shows to look forward to, covering a variety of park-related hot topics - and what’s more, they are all free to attend.

First up is the well-established Landscape Show in September, which focuses on the design, build and maintenance of indoor and outdoor landscaping projects.

Visitors to the show at Battersea Park in central London will have the opportunity to view cutting edge products and technologies geared towards improving their property, including outdoor furniture, paving options, trees and planting, containers and decking. The show attracts over 3,000 visitors including landscape designers, architects, contractors, facilities managers, local government planners, councils and parks officers, groundsmen and interior designers to name just a few.

Meanwhile the UK’s leading leisure industry exhibition returns to the NEC in Birmingham in September, representing all sectors of leisure including exercise, facilities, food and drink, sport, indoor play and family entertainment. Leisure Industry Week (LIW) is the ideal place to see what’s new, keep up with the latest trends and explore everything the leisure market has to offer. Holiday park owners will benefit from the extensive education and conference programme on offer at the show.

Next up is the new and improved Sports, Amenities, Landscaping Trade Exhibition’s, otherwise known as SALTEX, which gets underway at the NEC in Birmingham in November.

The Holiday Park & Resort Innovation Show takes place on the 11th and 12th of November at Birmingham NEC and is completely free to attend.

The Holiday Park & Resort Innovation Show takes place on the 11th and 12th of November at Birmingham NEC and is completely free to attend.

The new, centrally located, national exhibition venue and the more convenient time of year has attracted more than 200 exhibitors representing groundscare machinery, play equipment, landscaping products, pest control and waste management. The new look SALTEX also marks the 70th anniversary of the show and will feature a comprehensive programme of free educational seminars. Visitors can attend any of the 47 educational seminars on the show floor within the two-day Learning Live programme.

The hotly anticipated Holiday Park & Resort Innovation Show in November is shaping up to be an unmissable event.

“Given this is such an increasingly competitive industry, those running holiday parks and resorts really need to keep on top of the latest changes, developments and trends if they want to keep attracting customers back and appealing to new ones” says Will Mansfield, event manager for the show.

He adds: “This event has been designed as the one stop shop providing the ideas, resources and inspiration needed to ensure they can evolve, expand and innovate their holiday business.” Top industry speakers are confirmed including Henry Wild of the British Holiday and Home Parks Association, Robbie Davies of Hoseasons and Chris Laxen of Park Resorts. In addition there are over 150 exhibitors, 60 seminars and un-rivalled business opportunities over the two days.

With the biggest range of hot tubs and spas on display under one roof, the fourth edition of the UK Pool & Spa Expo returns to the NEC in Birmingham in November. Boasting broad selection of pool and spa-related products and services, the Expo promises to both inform and inspire its visitors. Exhibitors from some of Europe’s leading hot tub and spa manufacturers will be on hand to offer assistance on selecting the right products for your park, as well as providing expert advice on hot tub upkeep and maintenance. The Expo also boasts the added attraction of the 2015 UK Pool & Spa Awards that are being held at the new Resorts World, near to the NEC on the second evening of the exhibition, Monday 23 November.

If there’s one ingredient that singles out a holiday park from the crowd and secures repeat bookings, it is the quality of its water leisure provision. As the single best relaxation resource that a resort can provide, it is widely regarded as fundamental to a holiday park’s success. In January, Coventry’s Ricoh Arena plays host to the pool and spa exhibition SPATEX 2016 which, in its 20th anniversary year, attracts well over 100 exhibitors and is the ideal hunting ground to source new products and innovations. Displaying everything from pools, saunas, water play features and pool enclosures to energy saving chemical control and heating and ventilation units, you can be sure to find what you are looking for. Many exhibitors will also be offering special discounts exclusive to the show.

Village Life at Sandy Balls

Set in a 120-acre estate, the award-winning Sandy Balls Holiday Village offers a range of accommodation to suit all ages and budgets all year round

Set in a 120-acre estate, the award-winning Sandy Balls Holiday Village offers a range of accommodation to suit all ages and budgets all year round

Village Life at Sandy Balls

With a name that often prompts a snigger, Sandy Balls Holiday Village has been making memories for its guests for almost 100 years.

The park’s name is as memorable as the holiday village itself, which has a prestigious history that can be traced as far back as the reign of Henry VII. The name Sandy Balls dates back to the 15th century when Sandyballas, which is the description given to the dome-shaped sand and gravel outcrops on the estate’s western boundary, first appeared on historic maps.

“A combination of our history of being a family owned village, our beautiful location within the national park and the experience offered keeps generation after generation returning to our New Forest getaway,” says managing director Iain Brown.

“Even in busy periods guests comment on the peace and the tranquillity of the estate and the feeling of being surrounded by nature.”

Set in a 120-acre estate in the New Forest National Park, Sandy Balls welcomes around 100,000 guests each year and is open all year round. The five star holiday village offers a range of accommodation to suit all ages and budgets, including opulent woodland lodges, caravans, camping pods and fully-serviced touring pitches. Sandy Balls is also well-known for its leisure facilities which include swimming pools, a wellness area, play areas, arcades and a cycle centre.

Iain comments: “The park is popular with families in peak times and older couples, young families with pre-school children, seasoned tourers, and dog owners during off peak times. “In fact our guests are our best form of marketing - they return year after year and also recommend Sandy Balls to their friends and family.”

Holiday Snaps: Zoe House of Ladram Bay Holiday Park

Holiday Snaps: Zoe House of Ladram Bay Holiday Park

Zoe Ladram BayZoe House was brought up at Ladram Bay Holiday Park in Devon, which her father opened in 1943. Zoe took over the day-to-day running of the park in 2006, along with her brother Robin.

How has 2015 been for Ladram Bay Holiday Park?

It has been a fantastic season. The introduction of our brand new swimming pool and the refurbishment of Pebbles restaurant has had a great effect on business. This year we have seen a 15 per cent increase in bookings.

What are the main challenges facing the industry at the moment?

With the strength of the pound, holidays abroad are appearing cheaper this year, so it is really important that British holidaymakers have an incentive to holiday in the UK.

If you had to identify one element, what is the most crucial aspect to the success of your park?

As an independent park, we have the ability to constantly reinvest to ensure our facilities exceed customer expectation. We also can’t forget our stunning location on Devon’s Jurassic Coast.

What does a typical day in the office for you consist of?

My jobs range from managing staff and customers to investment planning, marketing and advertising. The variety makes it all the more interesting.

What has been your most interesting experience in the industry?

Last winter we undertook the biggest redevelopment since I became director in 2006. With the seasonal nature of the tourism industry in the UK, we only had four months whilst the park was closed to build our state-of-the-art swimming pool and adventure golf course, while also refurbishing the restaurant. Fortunately we finished just in time.

What is the best piece of business advice you have been given and by whom?

My father said that “without guests, Ladram is just a bay”. To me, this sums up everything we do, ensuring the Ladram experience is of the highest standard.

Where do you go on holiday?

I love to travel with my family, especially disappearing in our tourer for a short break and exploring the UK. This country has so much to offer.

Tell us a joke…

What do you call a man with a seagull on his head? Cliff!

Net Gains

Net Gains

Almost 80 per cent of Brits now use the internet to research their holidays.

Almost 80 per cent of Brits now use the internet to research their holidays.

Revolutionising the way that we live, work, shop, and communicate, startling figures from the National Office of Statistics revealed that 38 million adults in the UK accessed the internet every day in 2014. What’s more, 74 per cent of people bought goods or services online, up from 53 per cent in 2008.

The tourism industry is continuing to evolve around technology, with increasing access to information and services available at the customers’ finger tips. Guests now expect to see clear and representative images of accommodation and resort facilities online before they book. They want to read reviews, share other people’s experiences of the resort so they can decide whether or not it meets with their needs. And they expect to be able to do all this online, using whatever device they choose, whether it’s a smartphone, tablet PC, handheld computer or laptop.

“Users are booking when it’s convenient for them,” says Dawn Bee of website and business system provider Netguides. “Younger users don’t want to talk to anyone to book, it’s just not familiar behaviour for them anymore so they feel uncomfortable doing it. This means you are missing out on a lot of customers if you don’t take online bookings.”

Niall Norris of management and booking software CampManager concurs: “The number of holiday parks and campsites taking bookings online has increased dramatically in recent years,”

“We can see similar trends from all our clients across the UK, Ireland and France, that the proportion of bookings being made online is now averaging between 50 to 75 per cent of all bookings.”

Keeping up-to-date with the latest technology by moving to a computerised booking and management system may seem daunting, but Niall stresses the importance of moving with the times: “The right booking and management system will actually save you money, generate more business and free up so much of your time.

“We recommend that all parks to update their online booking pages and websites to be Mobile and Tablet compatible. We see clear trends that over 50 per cent of online bookings are now being made on Tablet and Smartphone devices.” He adds: “To ensure that you are catering for these customers and not losing out on bookings, it is important to address this immediately.”

CampManager offers a complete end to end process for managing a caravan park or campsite. Covering all aspects of site management, booking management and online booking, the system is user-friendly and can be tailored to suit the individual needs of each park.

“It is important to remember that not all visitors to your website have stayed at your park before. Therefore it is hugely important that your website is maintained as much as the park,” advises Niall. “An old and tired looking website, with poor quality photos will not attract new customers. Also a poor booking system that takes a long time just to check availability and does not provide alternative dates will frustrate your customers and potentially drive them elsewhere.”

The biggest change to online bookings that Dawn Bee of Netguides has seen in recent years is the move to mobile responsive online booking. Dawn explains: “There has been a surge in the popularity of mobile responsive bookings following Google’s emphasis in their search algorithm for mobile search and the growing use of mobile devices to book online.”

High Demand for Last Minute Breaks

High Demand for Last Minute Breaks

Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks in Devon reported a bumper start to the 2015 summer season, with last minute online bookings up by 15 per cent on the same period last year.

Although 93 per cent of the park’s accommodation for the first three weeks of the school summer holidays was booked up well in advance, demand was high for the remaining spaces available for last minute bookings.

Kevin Darvill, sales and marketing director at Woolacombe Bay said: “Clearly the travel disruption at the ports in Dover and Calais, coupled with the economic situation in destinations such as Greece, have all been deciding factors to remain at home.

“Last-minute on-line enquiries for peak season - compared to the same time last year - are up by 15 per cent, on-line sales have risen by 28 per cent and conversion rates have increased by 11 per cent.”

Holiday parks in Lincolnshire have seen a 45 per cent drop in crime levels, thanks to a successful crime prevention scheme in the county.

A partnership between Lincolnshire police, local holiday parks and other stakeholders, the Caravan Park Watch initiative has gone from strength to strength since it was started in 2014 and now has in excess of 50 member parks.

Members of the Caravan Park Watch scheme and the National Caravan Council (NCC)recently met with Boston and Skegness MP, Matt Warman, to brief him on its success in the area.

MP Matt Warman said: “The Lincolnshire Caravan Park Watch scheme is leading the way when it comes to preventing crime and sharing resources and ideas across the sector.

“The huge reduction in crime to date is testament to all the hard work that has been put into developing this important partnership.”

Holiday Scene With Hywel Davies

Holiday Scene With Hywel Davies

2015-05-16 10.09.50Hywel Davies is the owner and manager of South Wales Caravan Park in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. His parents started the park in 1978 and Hywel has lived on the 15 acre site since he was three years old. Hywel and his sister Cathrin took over the park four years ago and continue to improve the farm and its facilities each year.

How do you see the UK holiday industry at the moment?

In Carmarthenshire alone Tourism is worth £350 million. It is taking over farming as the most important industry in the area. Our county is getting its name out there and I have no doubt there will be changes soon in Local Authority boundary locations in Wales - I just hope that whichever way it goes that the good work will carry on.

What are the main challenges facing the industry and how are you meeting those challenges?

Our main challenges are rising fuel and electricity costs. We are currently looking into installing solar panels and heat pumps to warm water and facilities.

If you had to identify one element, what is the most crucial aspect to the success of your business?

Good customer service. I trained at Walt Disney World in Florida and from my days there I soon realised that exceeding all my guests’ expectations is the way to succeed.

Has it been a good year so far for South Wales Caravan Park?

It has been excellent year so far. We are lucky as we only have 25 pitches to fill in total, which is much easier to fill up than a few 100 pitches. Word of mouth, a couple of awards and repeat visitors are helping us a great deal.

What has been your most interesting experience in the industry?

Becoming an adult only park. When we made the decision just over two years ago, we were worried if it would work out but it has been the best decision and best experience we have had so far.

What is the best piece of business advice you have been given and by whom?

“Never miss an opportunity to market your business” - it was given to me by my father. We wear our Llwynifan Farm branded t-shirts and hoodies everywhere and even our hand towels in the ladies and gents toilets are branded!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Our park isn’t going to grow further, but I would like to improve our offering and facilities. Each year we like to do one big project to improve our offering.

Where do you go on holiday?

My partner and I drive to Italy usually towards the end of September for a week or two, and I leave my sister in charge of the park.

Anything else you would like to add?

I wish everyone a good season and hope we all have a sunny successful summer.

Poston Mill received the top gold honour in the parks category at May’s VisitEngland awards ceremony.

Herefordshire is now home to England’s highest rated holiday park after Poston Mill emerged as the overall victor in the 2015 VisitEngland awards for Excellence.

Poston Mill received the top gold honour in the parks category at May’s VisitEngland awards ceremony, beating nearly 2000 other eligible parks in England to the title.

Stepping up to receive the accolade from VisitEngland chief James Beresford at The Sage in Gateshead were the family business’s co-owners Wayne and Sarah Jones.

Sarah commented: “From the outset we wanted to make this a park where guests would feel genuinely welcome.

“That’s why the VisitEngland award for excellence means so much to us, because it is based not just on the quality of the park, but also the standards of service we provide."

Beautifully landscaped, Poston Mill has come a long way since first being taken over as a basic farm-based park just over 20 years ago. Since then, Wayne and Sarah have invested much time and energy into creating a high quality destination for discerning guests.

“I hope that one effect of our award will be to help other tourism businesses in the area by highlighting what a beautiful region this is to enjoy a truly memorable holiday,” added Sarah.

Show Visitors Spoilt For Choice

Visitors from across the country descended on Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire last month to visit the 2015 World of Park & Leisure Homes Show – the biggest in the show’s history.

With over 50 homes on display from some of the UK’s major manufacturers in the leisure lodge and park homes industry, the visitors were spoilt for choice at the four day outdoor exhibition.

The feel good factor was evident among exhibitors and the trade preview day was an ideal opportunity for park owners, site managers and others working within the industry to visit the show ahead of the general public.

As in previous years, the 2015 show was a one-stop-shop covering all aspects of park life. A varied selection of exhibitors were on hand to offer expert advice and guidance on choosing the right park and the right lodge or park home to fit any budget.

Omar Park Homes celebrated its 50th year in business with a cake cutting ceremony and drinks reception.

A highlight of this year’s show was a pop-up holiday park created by park and holiday home specialists Pathfinder Homes. Located at the main entrance to the show and aptly named the Pathfinder Garden Quarter, the area was equipped with aweinspiring gardens, luxury lodges and a courtyard, and featured some of Pathfinder’s most popular lodges – The Summit, Keeper’s Lodge, Meadow View and Country Retreat. In fact, The Summit lodge was voted ‘Ultimate Lodge of the Year’ at the show for its innovative design and evolutionary detailing.

Mike Wills, Pathfinder Homes MD stated: “We are delighted to have won the Ultimate Lodge of the Year Award for the third consecutive year. The industry is experiencing such an exciting period and we are proud to continue to innovate the standard.”

Meanwhile Omar Park Homes celebrated its 50th anniversary at the show with a special cake cutting ceremony and the launch of its brand new park home – ‘The Anniversary’.

Aside from lodges and park homes, there was plenty of information and advice on refurbishment, maintenance and of course those must-have little luxuries such as spas and hot tubs.
