Family Team Scores Awards Hat-Trick

Trethem Mill Touring Park in Cornwall is celebrating a triple triumph of awards, including an accolade for its work to protect endangered honey bees. The family-owned business celebrated its first honour when judges in the Cornwall Tourism Awards crowned it as the county’s finest caravan and camping park. The park’s environmental policies were marked in the second of the accolades it received this month from world-famous botanist David Bellamy. Professor Bellamy presented the park with his prestigious Conservation Award at its top gold level, recognising the raft of initiatives taken to safeguard the natural world. The hat trick of accolades was completed when David Bellamy also designated Trethem Mill as an official “Honey Bee Friendly” park as part of his new initiative to prevent the insects’ decline. Park owners Ian and Jane first moved to Trethem Mill with Ian’s parents – Derek and Lorna - 24 years ago, and Jane says the park’s success has been very much the result of a team effort: “Very sadly, Lorna passed away earlier this year – but she believed strongly, as we all do, in trying to make Trethem Mill a place for creating truly memorable holiday experiences,” said Jane. “We would like to see these awards as a tribute to her passion for this part of Cornwall, and to making the park a match for these beautiful surroundings.”

Timely Investment For West Cornwall Holiday Park

Pentewan Sands Holiday Park in Mevagissey bay, near St Austell, will be adding 15 new threebedroom Diamond, Platinum and Gold Plus range holiday homes to increase on-site accommodation in time for the 2016 season.
The investment comes following a hugely successful year for the resort. Bookings were up by 8.7 per cent on 2014, as well as the park being awarded a five-star Quality in Tourism award this year from Visit England for the first time since it opened in 1945 for its quality of the site.

An 8.7 per cent rise in booking has enabled Pentwan Sands to make further investments for the 2016 season.

“The new homes will create a real sense of comfort, luxury and style with excellent new facilities to create a home from home feel at Pentewan Sands. This year also marks the 70th year of the park, and we are delighted to continue to grow and welcome back happy guests year in year out.”
During 2015, Pentewan Sands had added a variety of new facilities to the park including a new play area on the beach, refurbished on-site tennis courts, and created a new, Cornish themed on-site pub as well as being joined by awardwinning burger chain HUBBOX, offering a laidback Cornish style with signature interior design on the beach-front.

Fern Backs Free Holidays Scheme

Fern Britton, who sacrificed part of her and her husband Phil Vickery’s holiday in Cornwall to help highlight the free holiday scheme, was taken around Mother Ivey’s by Patrick and his wife Meg

Fern Backs Free Holidays Scheme

TV presenter Fern Britton took time off in Cornwall this summer to help launch a new scheme by holiday parks to provide free holidays for struggling families.

The former star of ITV’s This Morning was at Mother Ivey’s Bay Holiday Park in Padstow where the initiative, described by Fern as ‘a genius idea’, is being pioneered. She said that her own happy memories of holidays in Cornwall, and her belief that a family holiday is ‘not a luxury but an essential’, had persuaded her to freely lend her support. The scheme is the brainchild of Patrick Langmaid, owner of Mother Ivey’s, who has pledged to give away a week’s holiday to a needy family for every hundred bookings his park takes.

NO COST STAYS

With the scheme already in action, Patrick hopes that the number of families enjoying no-cost stays at his park will be into double figures by the end of the season. He hopes too that his initiative will also be adopted by many of the UK’s other 3000- plus holiday parks as part of a national effort to provide holidays to families in crisis.

Mother Ivey’s beachside park has been owned by the Langmaid family for 25 years, and has 60 holiday caravans for hire. Three years ago, it won the tourist board accolade for the best holiday park in the South West. Patrick said a number of other South West holiday parks had already committed to his charity initiative including the Surf Bay Holidays group and Hendra Holiday Park in Newquay. “I really believe that this idea has huge potential to make a significant difference to the lives of struggling families, and I would like to see as many other parks on board as possible,” said Patrick.

“Offering one holiday to charity for every hundred holidays booked is practical and possible without incurring any major outlay,” he added. “The real cost of providing holidays is in maintaining the infrastructure of the park and the holiday homes, and this is generally covered by normal commercial activity.

“Every park has some spare capacity during the year, so to give some of those holidays away to needy families makes perfect sense. Parks will only have to bear the marginal cost of cleaning, laundering and energy.
