Look Before You Leap

Look Before You Leap

Look Before You LeapWatch out! Watch out! There is a plethora of non-compliant holiday hot tubs about. And with the onus on park operators and holiday let landlords to show duty of care, the holiday sector is being urged to look before you leap and check those hot tub credentials.

Currently acknowledged as the must-have search criteria for holiday bookers, there are potentially hazardous pitfalls that many holiday park operators are falling into when offering the hot tub experience to guests. In recent years, a significant number of holiday park operators and holiday let owners have purchased and operate portable spas which are in fact, domestic hot tubs, only designed for home use, and not intended for commercial markets. Often these hot tubs are not suitable for rental lodges and do not comply with the guidance within the Health & Safety Executive’s control of Legionella and other infectious agents in spa-pool system (HSG282), which was released in January 2017.

BEST PRACTICE

Although the HSG282 is not statutory law, it is considered best practice and is viewed as an approved code of practice. The standard would be used in a court of law as a measure of whether or not a risk holder has complied ‘as far a reasonably practical’ to meet the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. “A lot of holiday parks are not aware, or worse still, ignore the health and safety guidance that is published relating to hot tub use and control of Legionella in spa pools in business and commercial settings,” comments Chris Brady of 1 Stop Spas, Lincolnshire, whose sister company, SpaTech also runs training for holiday park operators and holiday let landlords.

Look Before You Leap 2“This poses the greatest risk to the use of hot tubs, particularly in a business setting like a holiday park.” In accordance with regulations made by the Health & Safety Executive, regular testing of both pH and disinfection should be made at least three times a day and the results logged and kept for at least five years. A monthly microbiological test is also required, testing for Legionella every quarter. The Management of Spa Pools booklet insists that the tub ‘needs to have a continuous chemical feeder built into the spa to continuously treat it with disinfectant’. These devices are not always installed into a hot tub at the point of manufacture and would therefore have to be retro-fitted at a later stage.

TICKING BOXES

Says Chris: “The release of HSG282 is very particular for all the right reasons, however, there were little or no hot tubs available on the market that ticked all of the criteria that HSG282 recommends. “Now that the industry has taken time to digest the detail released in HSG282, we are starting to see manufacturers designing and producing hot tubs which will be fit for purpose and comply with HSG282 in the very near future.”

Surfing At Arnside

Surfing At Arnside

Surfing At ArnsideHundreds of households across south Cumbria have received a broadband boost thanks to a local holiday park group. Silverdale Park near Arnside were switched on to ultra-fast fibre broadband in October, with the community-led broadband provider B4RN installing junction chambers along the five-mile route.

This meant that instead of struggling with poor speeds, sometimes less than 1MB, local homes can now surf the web one thousand times quicker. The speeds they are getting are much higher than what the most efficient BT line can provide, at a fraction of the cost too.

Parks owner Michael Holgate said the much greater speed will make a vast improvement to the efficiency of his business - and will be welcomed by holiday guests: “Like many rural businesses in Cumbria, we rely on the internet to generate sales, communicate with customers, and keep our website up to date,” he said.

Figures released by the National Caravan Council (NCC) reveal the total number of new motorhome and caravan owners had risen to over 56,000 nationwide.

The ‘staycationing’ boom was reflected at the recent West Midlands Caravan and Motorhome Show with motorhome registrations in the year to the end of June up by 14 per cent to 13,162; new caravan holiday homes and lodges were up by nine per cent to 21,214, and touring caravans were up by seven per cent to 22,185.

The nine-day show, which ran from September 30th to October 8th, attracted around 15,000 visitors with displays at award winning Shrewsbury dealership Salop Leisure showcasing the latest innovations for 2018 with the launch of exciting new models.

The Family Holiday Association has unveiled a replacement caravan that will enable the organisation to safeguard seaside breaks for hundreds of children and their parents.

The new caravan, based at Combe Haven Holiday Park, in St Leonards-on- Sea in East Sussex, was funded by travel insurance provider Citybond Suretravel after the charity’s previous van was taken out of service at short notice due to wear and tear.

The association, which provides breaks and day trips for families coping with problems such as long-term illness, bereavement, mental health issues, disability and domestic violence, officially opened the new caravan alongside Citybond managing director and FHA patron, Mansukh Ganatra. John McDonald, FHA director commented: “Mansukh and Citybond Suretravel have been generous supporters of the Family Holiday Association for many years.

“We are extremely grateful for their intervention, which not only helped us with a short-term problem but has also ensured that hundreds more children and their families will get a break in the coming years.”

Recycled Furniture

Recycled Furniture

RondeauRondeau Leisure is backing the effort to recycle plastic waste that is often dumped in the worlds’ ocean.

The business is supported by its own range of Pacific Ocean outdoor furniture which is produced from recycled plastic cartons that would otherwise find their way back to the seas. The aim of Pacific Ocean furniture is to turn plastic waste into durable garden additions with a lifespan of 10 years and beyond.

The range of chairs, tables, stools, loveseats and benches are made from milk cartons but are moulded into the same grain as wood – without the worry of rotting, splitting, cracking, fading or being burnt by cigarettes.

Rondeau Leisure’s managing director, Stuart Cooke, says: “The plastic waste issue is about more than just water bottles.  “Sports, leisure and hospitality providers – even care homes and hospitals - need to get on board by not buying plastic furniture that has to be scrapped after a season or two."

Parkdean Resorts’ ambitious investment will mean that the new facilities will be completed ahead of the 2017 travel season.

Parkdean Resorts is set to invest a record £50m on accommodation, retail and leisure facilities across its UK parks this year. The operator will be investing £17m into a range of new lodges, caravans and glamping facilities and £4m on refurbishments to existing caravans and lodges. Meanwhile, entertainment and leisure venues, and children’s activity areas will also be refurbished at many of its 73 parks nationwide as part of a significant investment exceeding £5.5m.

The ambitious investment will mean that the new facilities will be completed ahead of the 2017 travel season. Parkdean Resorts Chief Executive John Waterworth said: “It is a truly exciting time for Parkdean Resorts as we gear up for the 2017 season where substantial investment will continue and for what we are confident will be our busiest year yet.

“We are looking forward to introducing these changes which will further enhance our park experience – allowing holidaymakers to create many more amazing memories with family and friends.”

The Great British holiday used to be a simple affair. Rudimentary accommodation and facilities were considered the norm. But nowadays holidaymakers are demanding more from their annual summer break.

In response, UK leisure operators are now investing in high quality holiday accommodation, which is equipped with en-suite bathrooms, gourmet kitchens and state-of-the-art entertainment systems.

The huge explosion of glamping has also fed the trend, with all manner of yurts, shepherd huts, safari tents and camping pods popping up in quiet corners of the countryside. The obvious appeal for holidaymakers is that they can experience the best of both worlds - the simplicity and stress-free environment of the great outdoors while enjoying home comforts, coupled with rustic country charm.

“Our customers are looking for a back to nature experience,” says Tracey Sibun of Clear Sky Safari Tents. “They want to chill with their families, to escape the pressures of everyday life and to kick back and relax in the peace and quiet of the natural world. That said, they also want an element of home luxuries too - comfy beds, sink-into sofas and a cheery space to relax as a family if the weather isn’t good.”

Durrell Wildlife Camp opened in 2012, giving guests the opportunity to stay overnight in 12 stylish Ecopods which were supplied by Boldscan.

Durrell Wildlife Camp opened in 2012, giving guests the opportunity to stay overnight in 12 stylish Ecopods which were supplied by Boldscan.

Specialising in steel and wood framed safari-style tents, Clear Sky launched its first two-storey lodge tent earlier this year, which offers flexible accommodation for larger groups and families.

Designed to complement the natural environment, the lodge is made from a highly durable hardwood frame with premium canvas to ensure resistance to the elements. “We have found increasing numbers of holiday parks are adding safari tents to attract new customers who might not consider a caravan - and to give more choice to existing customers,” says Tracey.

The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in Jersey branched into the glamping market in 2012 and has since welcomed 2,000 extra visitors each year. The Camp invested in 12 stylish Ecopods which were designed and manufactured by Boldscan, as well as a safaristyle Club House which is the focal point of the camp.

The wildlife park is situated in 32 acres of landscaped parkland and has a strong commitment to looking after Jersey’s native wildlife, with large areas designated as native habitat areas. The Ecopods were welcomed by guests who wished to stay overnight at the park and be close to nature. Each pod accommodates two adults and two children, with optional additional accommodation in a Pyramid Tent for children. Facilities include a wood burning stove for heat and cooking, plus a separate pod housing a hot shower, flushing toilet and kitchen space. Two of the Ecopods have been adapted to suit disabled visitors.

Carry On Glamping

Over the past few years we have seen a huge explosion in the popularity of glamping with all manner of yurts, shepherd huts, safari tents and camping pods popping up in quiet corners of the countryside.

Farmers and landowners have been quick to cash in on the potential for diversification as an additional income stream by investing in units on their land. The obvious appeal for holidaymakers is that they can experience the great outdoors, while enjoying the luxury of a boutique hotel, coupled with rustic country charm. The UK festival scene has been one of the main pioneers in organising luxury temporary accommodation for those who aren’t so keen on the mud and the rise of the staycation has also helped push glamping to the forefront.

Now holidaymakers can stay in a huge range of unusual accommodation and it’s this variety, uniqueness and creativity that has a strong appeal to the discerning traveller who wants to holiday somewhere where that will be a real talking point.

Rivendale in the Peak District is one of the many businesses in the UK that has successfully branched into the camping and glamping market. The owners of Rivendale wanted to offer glamping accommodation to increase occupancy in the winter months. Owner Greg Potter comments: “We are one of the few parks in the Peak District National Park that is able to operate 11 months of the year. We know people want to take short breaks in the winter, just not in a tent, that’s why we became interested in glamping. We knew this was the best way of increasing our winter occupancy and appealing to a wider group of people.”

Camping Cabins supplied a 17m2 cabin for Rivendale in April 2014. Constructed from sustainable redwood pine, the cabin has two side room extensions with two sets of bunk beds and a table and seating area. Since then, Rivendale has taken delivery of a 10m2 cabin that is used as a treatment room for the on-site spa and they have placed a further order for a 14m2 Camping Cabin to replace one of their existing canvas yurts.

Greg adds: “The first Camping Cabin was a direct investment for the business. It is achieving around 50 per cent occupancy and with the costs of the fit out we envisage that the cabin will pay back in 16–18 months."
